History
Santiago de los Caballeros was founded by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage in 1495. Destroyed by an earthquake, it was moved in 1506 to the banks of the Jacagua River. And in 1562, the survivors of another earthquake are located in the present position of the city, on the banks of the Yaque del Norte River.

Name
It was named in memory of the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela; the name Caballeros was added, supposedly because 30 knights were its first settlers.
Centennial
It has several institutions that are more than one hundred years old, such as the Alianza Cibaeña Cultural Society, the Ateneo Amantes de la Luz, and the Hospicio San Vicente de Paúl, among others.
